The Carmel Central School District serves the municipalities of Carmel, Kent, Patterson and Putnam Valley. Established in 1795. Carmel became the county seat when Putnam County was formed in 1812 and contains the state's second oldest courthouse in continuous use. Located in the south central part of Putnam County, and best known for its beautiful lakes. Many of the village homes now found on the main street were originally located on the shores of Lake Gleneida and were moved when the lake became part of the reservoir system.
