Points of Interest

The Mahopac Central School District serves the municipalities of Mahopac, Carmel and parts of Putnam Valley. Mahopac and Mahopac Falls are hamlets located in the Town of Carmel. Originally settled by the Wappinger Indians who named the area Mahopac for its big lake—an old Algonquian Indian word for snake lake. In 1697 the land was granted to Adolph Philippe whose ancestors managed tenant farmers within Mahopac’s borders. These farmers supplied the historic Old Red Mills. Today, Mahopac has developed into a delightful upper middle-class residential community.
