The Town of Pawling was formed in 1788 and named after Col. Henry Beekman’s daughter Catherine Pawling. The town is recognized for its history, unique ecological environments, and for its natural beauty and trail networks that include the Appalachian Trail. The Oblong Land Conservancy was formed by a group of Pawling residents in an effort to protect the community's ecological, scenic, historic, and recreational resources. Listed on the National Register of historic places are the Akin Free Library, the John Kane House and the Oblong Meeting House.
