Bordered on the Hudson River, the City of Poughkeepsie lies within the Town of Poughkeepsie and is home to many historical sites, theaters, museums, shops and other attractions. Within the City is the Clinton House State Historic Site. It was built in 1765 and used from 1777 to 1783 when Poughkeepsie was the capital of New York. After burning down in 1783, George Washington ordered carpenters to rebuild it. The Bardavon 1869 Opera House, in the downtown district of Poughkeepsie, New York, is the oldest continuously-operating theater in New York State.
