The Yorktown School District serves the Town of Yorktown and parts of Yorktown Heights and New Castle. In 1788, the Town of Yorktown was named in commemoration of the American's decisive victory at Yorktown, Virginia on October 19, 1781. Today the town is renowned for its High School Lacrosse Program—one of the oldest and most successful programs in the Country. For shopping, the Jefferson Valley Mall is home to 90 stores. For bike enthusiasts, part of the 22 mile North County Bike Trailway passes through the area.
