Established in 1788, Pawling is a beautiful town whose history weaves a rich tapestry. Quakers were among the first to settle the area between 1730 and 1750, and formed the Oblong Meeting House in 1742. During the winter of 1767 General George Washington spent 2 months in Pawling with his headquarters at the John Kane House.

Admiral John Lorimar Worden, the captain of the Ironclad Monitor lived on Quaker Hill as did General Lew Wallace, the author of Ben Hur.

Governor Thomas Dewey moved to Pawling in 1938 and in 1944 was a presidential candidate running against Franklin D. Roosevelt, also of Dutchess County.

Other notable residents have been broadcasting immortals Lowell Thomas and Edward R. Murrow. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, the author of "The Power of Positive Thinking," also made Pawling his home.
 
Educational Facilities
The Pawling Central School District consists of one elementary school for grades K-4, a middle school for grades 5-8, and Pawling High School for grades 9-12. Total enrollment is 1385. The ratio of teachers to students is 1-13.

There are two nursery schools, the Sunshine School and Christ Church, and two private schools, Trinity Pawling Preparatory (all boys, includes a Middle School, grades 7 and 8 and the High School grades 9-12) and the Mizzentop Day School (Pre-K through 8th grades).
 
Recreational Facilities
Activities abound for young and old. The Edward R. Murrow park offers swimming, a playground and picnic area. The Dutcher Golf Course is America’s oldest public course. The Town of Pawling Lakeside Park features a 36 acre lake with beach, boating and tennis courts on 292 acres. Enjoy a hike on The Appalachian Trail. Some points of interest include: Gunnison Natural History Museum, Quaker Oblong Meeting house (circa 1764), John Kane House (circa 1760) Pawling Free Library, Akin Free Library (circa 1910). Summer camps are available.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Educational Facilities Church, Central Baptist Church of Pawling, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, United Methodist Church, Holmes United Methodist Church, Lutheran Church of Christ the King and Christ Church on Quaker Hill.
